What is Counselling/Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy comes from the Ancient Greek words, ‘psyche’ and ‘therapeuien’ and means to ‘nurse, or hold, the soul’. As an experienced counsellor and psychotherapist, I cannot rescue you or give you an instant fix. What I can offer is to be alongside you, wherever your story may take us, and explore with you the complexity of thoughts, feelings, perceptions, experiences and behaviours that are uniquely yours and which may be causing you difficulty, distress or despair.

As children, we adopt certain ways of being to cope with both our internal developmental challenges and the stresses inherent in our childhood worlds. These adaptations which served us well as children can often hinder us in our adult lives and create difficulties for us.

It is often these unconscious parts of ourselves, our ‘blind spots’, that cause us distress. Psychotherapy provides the space, support and understanding required for us to gain consciousness and acknowledge the truth of who we are, even those parts of ourselves that we may have disowned, forgotten about or hidden.

There is an ancient belief that the Soul Bird, or Sielulintu, delivers the soul to the newborn baby and transports the soul to the afterlife at the moment of death. It is often our soul nature, which can become hidden and eclipsed.

Crisis can be seen as an opportunity to access the soul’s wisdom, understand and create meaning from our painful experiences and grow and develop our full potential as human beings.

“Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness. It took me years to understand that this too, was a gift”

– Mary Oliver

“Just as we cannot see our own faces without looking into a mirror, we cannot know ourselves without looking into our soul.”
